Fiber Product Biodegradability Assessment Test (Hohenstein Method)

Biodegradability Evaluation Test for Fiber Products involves confirming biological activity throughout the entire test period using standardized testing soil under aerobic conditions, incorporating various parameters such as temperature and soil moisture. The test can be conducted under defined laboratory conditions or practical outdoor conditions. Following the specified test period, the assessment includes evaluating the product’s degree of decomposition, environmental compatibility, and contamination due to product decay (via biotoxicity testing or chemical analysis).

Biodegradability Evaluation Test for Fiber Products

StandardHohenstein Inspection
Standard NameHohenstein Inspection is developed based on the following standards:
・DIN EN ISO 11721-1: Fibers – Measurement of resistance to microorganisms for cellulose-containing fibers
・DIN EN ISO 846: Plastics – Measurement of the influence of microorganisms on plastics
・DIN EN 13432: Packaging – Requirements for composting and biodegradation of packaging for recycling
OverviewHohenstein Inspection includes the measurement of aerobic biodegradability in soil for fiber products. Simultaneously,
visual evaluation and environmental toxicity assessment are also conducted.
Seeding SourceSoil
Sample Quantity・Finished Products: Minimum of 12 points
・Research and Development Materials: Minimum of 1m×1m
・Fiber: Approximately 400g of test samples or 2 yarn spools
Testing Temperature・Indoor (20±2°C, relative humidity 65±4%)
・Outdoor (Testing can be conducted in an environment close to actual conditions, but temperature and humidity control are not possible.)
Testing PeriodUsually 4 weeks to 12 months
MeasurementsMass loss rate (%), visual observation, environmental toxicity assessment (cress test), acute toxicity assessment (earthworm test)
EvaluationBiodegradability (%)

Label Acquisition Process

It is possible to apply for a certificate or Hohenstein’s Biodegradable Certification Label. The requirements for label acquisition include achieving a mass loss rate of 90% or more within 12 months and passing the environmental toxicity assessment (cress test) with a germination rate of 70% or higher. Upon successful completion of the pre-application and inspection, you can apply for Hohenstein’s Biodegradable Certification Label (valid for 1 year). If label acquisition is necessary, please consult with us when making your request.
